Welcome to
Manor Leas Junior Academy
Our Design and Technology (D&T) curriculum aims to inspire creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking in pupils by engaging them in practical and innovative activities. Pupils design, make, and evaluate purposeful products, learning to work with a variety of materials and tools. The curriculum emphasizes the iterative design process, fostering resilience and collaboration. It equips pupils with technical knowledge, including an understanding of structures, mechanisms, electrical systems, and food technology, preparing them for future learning and life in an ever-changing world.
The D&T curriculum is delivered through project-based learning, encouraging pupils to explore and apply their knowledge and skills across key areas:
Lessons are hands-on and cross-curricular, integrating knowledge from maths, science, and art to deepen understanding. Each project follows the design-make-evaluate cycle and encourages teamwork and creativity. Pupils document their progress in design portfolios, reflecting on their learning. Enrichment opportunities, such as STEM challenges, workshops, and partnerships with local businesses, provide real-world context.
By the end of KS2, pupils will confidently use the design-make-evaluate process to solve real-world problems creatively. They will demonstrate technical skills in working with materials, tools, and techniques, and have a foundational understanding of mechanical and electrical systems. Pupils will be able to evaluate their work thoughtfully, considering functionality, aesthetics, and user needs. They will also understand the importance of nutrition and be equipped with basic cooking skills. The curriculum ensures pupils are ready for the challenges of secondary D&T and fosters curiosity, innovation, and practical skills for life.
